Scale Model Ships
Ships have played an important role in the existence and early history of mankind. The “New World” was discovered on a ship, wars have been lost and battles won on ships. The most luxurious form of transport today, is still on a ship cruise. Chuck Miller has been building scale model ships for thirty years. He can eternalize man’s fascination with ships of all kinds, by applying his expertise, knowledge and craftsmanship. Chuck Miller’s scale models have become sought after trophies and prize possessions.
His concrete and majestic ships will be displayed in cases for generations to come.
Chuck Miller has sold scale model ships to companies, the navy, museums and collectors in the states and all over the world. The ships are usually plank on frame; this means the keel is set. The frame is setup and the hull of the model is planked like a real ship. Sixty hours is spent a week in building ships according to precise scale. The construction of tables for the ships is also a talent which chuck Miller has mastered. Using oak as a medium, tables are built with either shaker or Queen Anne Legs. Colors for the
designed tables can be varied, depending on the oak type. Cases for the ships can be ordered, custom made by New Wave Acrylics from Charlotte.
A wide range of the most loved and famous scale model ships have been designed and crafted by Chuck Miller. From the HMS Victory, USS Constitution, CSS Alabama, and Flying Cloud to the humble Armed Launch Boat. The designs of the ships originated from paintings such as the famous painting of the Hunley docked in Charleston by Conrad Wise Chapman, in December 1863. Plans for some of the
constructed scale model ships were taken from the actual restored ships, such as The Constellation which is moored in Baltimore’s Inner Harbour.
Each model ship reflects Chuck Miller’s discipline, patience, dedication and love for this rare form of art.
Specialists, researchers, and admirers of prototypes in any form, insist on replicas which are flawless and crafted to strict and prescribed specifications. Structure, form, color, texture and material used, must be combined to reflect or portray the original ships. In a display case, flaws of any nature are exaggerated and magnified. Intense research by the craftsman of each individual scale model is a necessity to
guarantee that the ship is a true image. Critics of these model constructions include historians and scientists who specialise in the many factors which play a role in this intricate art.
A professional craftsman is only as good as the outcome projected in his last ship scale model.
