Pirate Ship Model

Pirates have ventured on oceans of the world for centuries. Pirate ships and crews have become universal themes in romantic, animated, classical and horror story-lines of the High Seas. Chuck Miller, a craftsman from Charlotte, has managed to create concrete images of both fantasies and realities to eternalize pirate ship models for generations. This man has integrated and acquired many skills to create beautiful models for over thirty years.

The mystery which surrounds pirate ships afloat on rough stormy and dangerous oceans is captured in each design and creation. This art has developed far beyond the basic “ship in a bottle” technique we all know from childhood. Chuck Miller has sold and crafted models of pirate ships to major companies, the navy, museums, and specialist collectors in the states and around the world. The models constructed by him are usually plank on frame, this means that the keel is set. The frame is setup and the hull of the model is planked like a real ship. Sixty hours is normally spent a week building ships in the workshop, which is a time consuming

and disciplined craft. To accompany each individualised pirate ship model, tables are also available. The tables are built with either shaker or Queen Anne Legs. Table color varies, depending on the type of oak used. Cases are custom made by New Wave Acrylics, situated in Charlotte. A wide range of the most loved ships and boats, which history is made of, can be owned. From the typical pirate ship model to majestic ships like The HMS Victory and Flying Cloud. Chuck Miller gets his inspiration and basic design from restored ships such as The Constellation which is moored in Baltimore’s Inner Harbour. He has also completed ships which originated from art works, including The Hunley Docked in Charleston, painted by Conrad Wise Chapman in December 1863. Specialists and lovers of this intricate craft can identify flaws in structure, texture, color and interpretation immediately. In a glass case, faults are magnified and professionalism cannot be compromised. The master craftsman, Chuck Miller, has focussed mainly on the Brigantine model. This generally used pirate ship was fast, easy to manoeuvre and had twice the cargo space of a sloop. They could carry one hundred pirates and targets were easily intimidated with the fire power on board. Corsair pirate ships came mainly from the Barbary Coast; they were associated with pirates throughout early history.

Prototypes in any form require many hours of research to guarantee an accurate replica. The complicated techniques applied by ship builders of previous centuries, have to be implemented in all models constructed. Acquiring these skills, involves a wide source and continuous self-motivation. The first link to the world of pirate model ships is: www.chucksshipmodels.com.
